It's not easy being yellow.

Dear Birdies in the feeder
I am your fearless leader
Who forgot to put seeds out last night
OH you guys are a sight
Sorry dog gave you such a fright
But did you have to mess up the deck?
I should give you heck!

ok that was sooo lame, but those socks are soooo amazing and my feet are cold....I can imagine them on my feet sitting in front of a fire...

ps...I love your blog name...

In the Summer of 2006 I joined the group internet knit-a-long called Amazing Lace.
I had just learned to knit socks in December of 2005 - with help from my mom. The basic plain knit sock recipe she uses. She's left handed so I had to teach myself to knit from a booklet. I learned the basics when I was a teenager, but had no real interest for very long.

By the time I joined Amazing Lace I was ready to try something harder. A fancier pattern from the internet. This was the pattern I went crazy with! At the end of Summer I met the challenge to knit something a little lacy.
(A garden of socks for the photo contest.)

Trouble is I bought all that yarn on sale and nobody in the family has wanted the yellow socks for themselves or a friend in need of gift giving. So I am giving them away.

For a chance to win the yellow socks write a little letter of poetry. As described in my previous introduction to the Whirl Into Winter Giveaway:
"Face a window and write a poem in the form of a tiny letter addressed to anything you see outside."
For inspiration, read actual student entries from an Outdoor Lit class here.
My attempt:
Dear Mr. Maple,
Dignified and gracious
standing guard at driveway's edge.
Does it tickle your bark when those 2 bushy tailed gray squirrels
chase each other round and round?
No Poetry Police here... All actual attempts will qualify :)
International entries accepted for both contests on this blog.

Some of our favorite people are overseas right now!

  1. Wow, it's a lot of pressure being the first entry, but here goes...

    Dear Plant in a Pot
    As you sit in the shade avoiding the sun;
    Wishing for water is not very fun;
Oh where is that woman with the watering can?
She's on the computer entering as many giveaways as she can!

    Have fun!
PS I live in Perth Western Australia and it is HOT

  2. The sun shines
Out my window on the snow
    and casts upon the earth
    a gorgeous stunning glow.

My first attempt at poetry since jr. high and that was a long time ago...

Oh there you stand a lonely tree
and see me peering out to thee.
A Tree that looks at God all day,
and lifts her empty limbs to pray.
Poems are made by fools like me, I too should lift my limbs and pray.

I'm not good at this, but I do want a chance at your lovely socks.

  4. It's night and I live in the city
No tree or plant peers back
As my breath fogs the frosty window
    Blinking lights that could be
From the holiday or just from a car
    Become a blurry light show
And I can't bear to wipe the glass

    It's not easy being yellow
    Whatever that means
    I'm feeling a lot mellow
    And, I'm overseas right now
    If I win
    I'll scream and scream
'Cause it will be the first time
    I've won anythin' ...

Will that do? I'm new in quilting. laili11harun@yahoo.com

  6. They're not my size but as someone who is just starting to knit socks I just wanted to say "beautiful job!" and I LOVE the cuffs you put on them!! They really make the sock (and, boy, do those socks make me wish for spring!)

I'll throw in a poem for fun:

Obsidian trees stark against a greying sky
    Storm clouds low and ominous
    Threatening snow
    Always more snow
    Will it ever end?
    The sun has fled.

  7. sweet tomatoes and basil,
    you never let me down
    as your bounty flourished
    all summer long.

    I'm sorry I let you
    freeze last week,
    but it was so cold,
and you were old and dry.

(OMG that is such a crazy poem, but the socks are the BOMB!!! I'm a sock knitter too, and would love to have those gorgeous socks!)

  9. Snow flurrying to the earth
    Covering everything with white purity.

Crystal clear windows give no distortion,
making it hard to know security.

But the crackling of the wood stove,
the contented hiss of the kettle,
Wrap me in warmth physically, so that I might enjoy the cold outdoors spiritually.

This is a weird poem n'est-ce pas? I could sure use the socks..my feet are always cold here in northern Maine.

  10. The darkness begins to hide behind the light,
the beauty of another day is about to begin
its all quiet and peaceful for a moment
till the kids run in the house, and the people begin to go to work
oh well it was peaceful for awhile and God blessed me and let me see another sunrise.

    Happy New Year! mrs.mommyyatgmaildotcom

  13. Dear Yellow Socks
    I need a treat
    for my feet
They get so wet and Cold
I am afraid they will grow mold
and then I will have no feet when I grow old.

  14. Dear Picket Fence,
    You keep out the walkers
Who love my flowers so dear
They must come into my yard
    And get so very near!

And seriously, these people just walk into my yard and will pull out a spoon and bag and start digging up my flowers! My family loves funky socks!

  15. Dear Little Birds,
What a joy to see you feed:
At you little ceder house of seed:
    Oh that it might,
give you strength through the night,
    for your wintery flight.

This is my 1st attempt at poetry.
